Following on from their NFC enabled NBA jerseys, Nike have launched a limited edition NFC enabled sneaker. Available via the SNKRS app, the AF1 NikeConnect QS NYC sneaker allows members only exclusive opportunities. For example, direct access to exclusive events in NYC and other web based content
The sneakers contain an NFC tag embedded directly into the side. A simple tap with an NFC enabled phone activates the content.
The tag itself is passive and doesn’t act as a device to record or store any activity. It’s purpose is to encourage engagement between product/brand and user. It’s an important step (excuse the pun) in that it’s the first time that Nike have added the tags to footwear.
Whether the tag can also be used as an authentication mechanism or registration system is not known, but special edition Nike trainers are often sought after items.
